Poliomyelitis

Polio, short for poliomyelitis, is a viral infectious disease caused by the poliovirus, which primarily spread through person-to-person contact, typically via the faecal-oral route. Contaminated water is one of the ways in which the virus can be transmitted, although it’s not the primary mode of transmission as when someone with an active polio infection passes the virus in their faeces, and then this contaminated faecal matter enters the water supply. In regions with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water supplies, there is a risk of water sources becoming contaminated with the virus, including rivers, lakes and wells. In this instance, certain specific submicron water filtration cartridges and UV sterilization systems can be capable and successful in the reduction and removal of such viruses, leaving the water free from transmission.
