Ferrous Iron

Ferrous iron, also known as soluble iron or Fe(II), if a form of iron that can be located in water sources that can enter water through natural processes or as a result of human activities, such as mining, industrial discharges, or the corrosion of iron-containing pipes and plumbing fixtures. In low concentrations, ferrous iron is generally not harmful to human health, as some individuals may experience benefits from small amounts of dietary iron, however, when present in higher concentrations, ferrous iron can cause various issues, both aesthetically and functionally. These aesthetic effects from high levels in water can cause the water to appear discoloured, often giving it a yellowish or reddish tint, which can stain laundry, plumbing fixtures and fittings, ceramics and other surfaces which come into contact. The taste and odour of water is affected, causing a metallic taste and distinct odour that some describe as rusty or sulphur-like. Issues with plumbing and plumbing appliances which can contribute to the formation of iron deposits or scale in plumbing systems, which can clog pipes, reduce water flow and impact the performance of appliances such as water heaters, washing machines and dishwashers.

Addressing issues related to ferrous iron in water and treatment methods are oxidation and filtration. Oxidation of ferrous iron can be converted to ferric iron (Fe(III)) which helps to precipitate it out of the water using agents such as chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, or potassium permanganate can be used for this purpose. Once the iron is oxidized, it can be removed from water through filtration methods such as activated carbon filters, sediment filters, or specialized iron removal filters. These specific treatment methods required depend on the concentration of ferrous iron and other water quality factors.
